Cystic Fibrosis and Reproductive Health Decision Aids

Ongoing studies in Dr. Kazmerski’s laboratory include the MyVoice:CF Pilot Study and Parenting Experiences of People with Cystic Fibrosis. The MyVoice:CF study is to explore the feasibility, usability, and acceptability of a CF-specific reproductive health decision aid. The tool addresses genetics, fertility, pregnancy, parenting, breastfeeding, and birth control in the context of cystic fibrosis for people assigned female at birth. As more people with CF are living longer, healthier lives, patient-provider conversations about reproductive health decision-making and planning are becoming more common.

Parenting Experiences of People with CF is a qualitative study of parents with cystic fibrosis who have one or more children under ten years of age. The aim of the study is to learn about the successes, needs, and experiences of parents with CF. There are two arms of the study. In the first, qualitative interviews are being conducted with 20 mothers and 20 fathers. The second arm of the study uses a form of community-based participatory research called PhotoVoice, which uses photography to explore topics within a given population. Each cohort decides as a group what aspects of parenting and CF to explore, and they participate in thematic analysis of the photographs taken.

Upcoming studies include a nationwide survey of CF care team providers on reproductive and sexual health care practices for adolescent and adult men with CF as well as a survey of men with CF on their sexual and reproductive health, knowledge, and needs.
